About Us

Based at Eastern Kentucky University, The Appalachian Shakespeare Center was founded in 2016 to promote agency and citizenship by engaging learners and audiences with the works of William Shakespeare. Our staff is made up of EKU alumni and professors who also produce EKU's musical theatre. To spread art, culture, and critical thinking through the Appalachian region, AppShakes focuses on educational programming and professional theatrical production. Our education work includes   summer Shakespeare productions, high school project based learning programs like the Loose Canon Project, and our touring production (with a Shakespeare puppet!) Bard's Friends Forever.

a two-person performance focused on some of Shakespeare's most interesting friendships. Our show explores social and emotional learning through friendship while giving students a taste of Shakespearean text. The show runs approximately 45 minutes and can be done almost anywhere, classrooms, libraries, stages, gyms, you name it!

Loose Canon Project

A multidisciplinary arts education initiativefor students in the Appalachian region of Kentucky

LCP is a project based learning initiative to involve high school classes and organizations in critical thinking, creativity, and team building. Each year, your group will be assigned a Shakespeare Play in which to base your project from. On April 19, 2024, we will gather for a festival on campus at Eastern Kentucky University where our groups will present or share their projects, participate in workshops, and more! Each project is different and based on the focus of your class, organization, or overall student interested and DOES NOT have to be theatrical - in fact, we encourage you to explore other mediums in which to create!
